A viral video shows Russian President Vladimir Putin appearing to sleep in the stands for a moment at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to have mocked Ukrainian athletes on the first official day of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. On February 4, celebrations broke out at Bird’s Nest Stadium marking the start of the 2022 Winter Olympics and players entered the stadium holding their country’s flag. President Putin, however, was seen stealing a nap for seconds as the Ukrainian athletes entered the premises. Mirror reported that he could have “pretended” to sleep. Putin was filmed catching up on his sleep amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The incident which is going viral by the minute is being touted as adding fuel to the fire and is associated with distress, sparking fears of war between the two nations.

Take a look at the brief moment that made headlines across the internet.

The 69-year-old attended the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics despite the ban on Russian athletes from representing their country playing for doping. Russian athletes had the chance to participate, but under the banner of the “Russian Olympic Committee”. Moreover, in case of victory of the Russian athletes, their national anthem will not be played.

As well as dozing off as Ukrainian athletes entered the Bird’s Nest stadium, Putin also faced backlash for appearing to be the only dignitary who arrived to attend the ceremony without a mask. Putin was seen sitting in the VIP booth without a face covering despite China’s strict mask policy aligned with its zero-COVID strategy.

About 3,000 performers took part in the ceremony, including the People’s Liberation Army which raised the Chinese national flag. President Xi Jinping was given a standing ovation for a minute upon his arrival.
