ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Thousands marched through central Athens on Thursday, accompanied by a heavy police presence, to mark the anniversary of a 1973 student uprising that was brutally crushed by the military dictatorship Greek at the time.

The anniversary is celebrated annually with marches from the Polytechnic University of Athens to the US Embassy and has often, but not always, turned violent. Thursday’s march was peaceful.
