(WBNG) – Broome County Catholic Schools are celebrating the 48th annual “Catholic Schools Week” from January 30 to February 5 with daily activities to go along with this year’s theme of faith, excellence and service.

To kick off the celebration, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham joined Catholic school officials and students Monday for a CSBC flag-raising ceremony in front of Binghamton City Hall.

During the raising of the flag, Mayor Kraham officially proclaimed January 31 “Catholic Schools Week” in Binghamton, encouraging citizens to observe this week with appropriate civic and community events.

“If you look at the students who graduate every year, whether it’s academics, athletics, extracurriculars, music, entrepreneurship, these are students who run our city and run our community,” said said Kraham.

The four famous Catholic schools in Broome County are Seton Catholic Central, St. James, St. John’s and All Saints.

The schools will celebrate the faith by organizing several masses. For excellence, students will participate in different types of academic, athletic, and performing arts events. Students will also participate in many projects serving nursing home patients, food pantries and more.

On February 1 at 12:40 p.m., the Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, Douglas J. Lucia, will celebrate Mass at Seton Catholic Central.

Seton Catholic Central and St. James have designated February 3 as Teacher Appreciation Day where Seton students will have the opportunity to dress for their future profession. St. James plans a teachers’ lunch where students can dress up as their favorite character from a book or author.

St. John’s and All Saints are having a Teacher Appreciation Day on February 4 where Grade 6 students will compete against teachers and staff in volleyball matches.

Bishop Lucia will also visit All Saints Day on February 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and the school choir will perform at an assembly in the gymnasium.
