Keep Suffolk Beautiful will be holding a 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. recycling drive on September 25, in the parking lot of Northern Shores Elementary School, 6701 Respass Beach Road. The event is reserved for residents of Suffolk.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful is delighted to partner with Soles4Souls Inc. They will be on hand to collect unwanted shoes. Soles4Souls turns unwanted shoes and clothes into an opportunity by preventing them from getting lost and putting them to good use: providing relief, creating jobs and enabling people to break the cycle of poverty. The organization reuses products to deliver its microenterprise, disaster relief and direct assistance programs. With sites and warehouses on three continents, Soles4Souls has been able to distribute more than 73 million pairs of shoes and clothing in 129 countries since 2006.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful is also proud to continue its partnership with Boy Scout Troop 16 who will be on hand to collect unusable American flags. All collected US flags will be burned in a meaningful flag withdrawal ceremony in accordance with US code.
The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office is also encouraging residents to take advantage of secure document shredding. Sheriff EC Harris says, âIdentity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country; thus, we must remain vigilant to protect our privacy.
Items for recycling include:
- Electronics (TVs under 42 inches and no tube TVs)
- Lightly worn clothes
- Plastic bottles and jugs # 1 & # 2
- Cardboard, paper and magazines
- Plastic bags
- Glass containers
The collection will also collect hazardous household waste such as oil, gasoline, antifreeze, cleaners, propane tanks, pesticides, CFLs and more. Disposal of these items is limited to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste, and you must show Suffolk ID.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful continues to support the local charity ForKids. Donations of non-perishable food, toiletries, deodorant, and anything bubbling like hand soap and dish soap are welcome and necessary.
The Lions Club will also be available to collect hearing aids and glasses and sell brooms.
Additionally, Suffolk Mosquito Control will be present with information on how to control mosquito populations in the home and distribute mosquito repellent dunks free of charge to Suffolk residents. Residents with a Suffolk ID can get a two-dunk pack with information on how best to use them.
All participants are asked to wear masks and respect social distancing when unloading their vehicles.
