MORRISON, Ill. – Resolution 440 of the 19th National Legion Convention, which was passed in 1937, partially states that all unusable American flags that were used to decorate the graves of veterans on Remembrance Day (and others similar services) should be collected and inspected. Worn and unusable flags must be condemned and properly destroyed by burning.

American Legion Station 328 in Morrison collects year-round unusable flags from their retired flag drop box at 306 E. Main St., Morrison. Other flags, such as POW / MIA and state flags, may also be dropped.

The annual Burning Ceremony takes place on the last Sunday in September at 12:30 pm This year will be September 26 at Morrison Veterans Memorial Park, 150 E. High St., across from Northside Elementary School. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be canceled.

The public is welcome to attend and may bring in unusable flags. Although the ceremony is not long, garden chairs are encouraged.

The Morrison Legion also sells flags for $ 20 and will help replace and install them, if needed. Questions can be directed to mail at (815) 310-0333 or [email protected]
