Former Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa has again caused controversy by once again claiming that the ‘bhagwa’ or saffron flag may become the country’s national flag in the future. The top BJP leader added that the saffron flag is a symbol of sacrifice.

Eshwarappa said: “The saffron flag has been respected in this country for a long time. It has a history that spans thousands of years. The saffron flag is a symbol of sacrifice. In RSS we pray before the saffron flag for instill that value in us.The saffron flag may become the national flag of this country today or someday. There is no doubt about it.

“We don’t have to hoist the tricolor every time they [Congress] tell us. The tricolor is the national flag according to our constitution and we give it all the respect it deserves.”

Eshwarappa, who was sacked following the death of a contractor who alleged bribery, previously sparked controversy over the same issue. He had said on February 9: We will hoist the saffron flag everywhere. Today or tomorrow, India will become a Hindu nation. Even at the Red Fort.

The statement had drawn backlash from Congress leaders leading protests in the Assembly and on the streets.
